Shopper'dilemma: 1966 911
Hey all,
I've got an opportunity on a '66 911. The car is a paradox with a gorgeous interior and a lot of (at least) surface rust on the exterior with some perforation at the usual spots. The big problem for me is that the car is 300 miles away and I've only got the pictures and testimony of the owner's (who do not really seem to be car people). I don't really want to drive all the way there unless I was pretty sure to be returning with the car. I've put a link to some pics they've sent me for your situational awareness. They're asking $6k. What do you all think? http://picasaweb.google.com/Norman.Sloan/66911?feat=directlink Thanks, Nathan |

My view is that distance is all relative. 300 miles for me is 1/2 a day's drive and more than worth it to go and check out a 'maybe'.
From experience, the dilemma is more whether of whether you actually want the car. If this was definite 'must have' you would have drove there after work. Not trying to be critical or negative, but for me the 300 miles is a non-issue. Then again I'm not really close to anything and used to live nowhere near anything. Good luck with the choice, but my advice is to fire up your current beast and go for a Saturday drive. If nothing else you get a good day on the highway. jb |

300 miles will seem to be very far away, but with the right music, right company, cup of coffee, and a truck and trailer in tow, time will fly!
In all seriousness, if this is a vehicle (project) you have to have, this Saturday should already be booked with the current owners. I know with me personally, when there is something I feel I absolutely must have, I would be calling the owner as I am getting on the road. Maybe there is something you don't feel comfortable about?

You need to make the drive, even if you come back with an empty trailer. I live in So Cal and took my trailer back to Oklahoma a few years back to buy a 67 Mustang Fastback that was represented as very little rust. It was a Fred Flintstone car at best and I drove all the way back with an empty trailer. Did a Phoenix run a year later with the same result. Better than being stuck with a car you don't want and that you can't unload.

300 miles is nothing if you are looking for such a car, my Chevy's engine is warmed up if you pass.

Ok, I get it, and thanks for the input. I'm in the military and have two kids under five so trips have to be planned in advance. I was mostly just wanting some input on the car after looking at the pics. Is it a disaster or something a reasonable person would be interested in?

It is certainly not a project for the light hearted, but a early car with nice color interior and exterior; better have a big bank roll for this one!

I would request a pelican drive by. $6,000 paid for this 66 is the cheapest money you will spend on it. That car is in need of a $$$$ major rustoration. Unless you have mad DIY skills you are better off passing. I will say, you possibly could re-coup your money parting it out. So not a real risky purchase.

This is not my car, nor do I have any affiliation with it, but for comparison purposes here's a 66 project in the Pacific Northwest:

Both cars listed will provide nothing but adventure.. As stated above, "the $6k purchase price is the least you'll spend on this car". Do not be swayed by that pretty red interior.. this car is hiding a lot!
Unless you've got the time and the fabrication skills to do the repair, or the money to throw at it to have someone else do it right... I'd forget about this one!

I would say it is going to be a very expensive restoration. Every inch of that car will have to be redone. I spent $20,000 on comparitively minor rust. ............motor ......suspension.........tires........... fuel system, etc....
That car will end up closer to $ 75,000 when complete. There are a few very nice 66s on the market for that kind of money. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=756019

That will be a crazy expensive resto.. one of the things you can't see from the pics is the pitting of the metal on those brown spots, even after media blasting etc.. the pitted metal will have to be addressed. In addition of course to the undiscovered but now exposed rust. I can only imagine what the rest of the tub will reveal once that unusually nice interior (given the rest of the car) is removed. paul

It will cost a small fortune to restore.
So we do know it was worth somewhere between $6,000 and $21,100.00

I would say it depends who bought it. If it was a noted restorer who understands what he is doing it was worth $21,100. If the buyer was... say me... it could have been just another case of "irrational exuberance".

Labor/time = dollars! $21k to start will cut deeply into tomorrow's profit margin.
