That's a turnbuckle. Never seen one break on the threads like that. I really can't imagine how a break like that could occur. Looks like it just sheared. Metal fatigue?

I bent mine up and had to replace it (the center section is just hollow tube and I bent it up gripping it with a pipe wrench trying to break the nuts free).

I'd think that'd be a $5 part in a wrecking yard or in a parts car. Got any wrecking yards nearby?
