Broken Alt tie rod : (

So I finally get the head rebuilt,Belts and rollers done, replaced all vacuum lines with a Lindsey racing kit, installed an upgraded headlight wiring harness and put it all back together.... Took one very long deep breath (this is the first car, let alone Porsche 944 I have ever worked) turned the key and.... It din't even blow up or catch fire! lol

It did however have a "that s just not quite right" sound to it coming from what I thought was belt rollers. I localized the sound to the alt tie rod tension do hicky. Which was broken at the threads closest to the passenger side. So my question is what would have cause this? It was fine after I tightened the belts and I'm pretty sure its was not to tight. I can just turn it a little over 90 deg by hand.

Also does anybody have a spare they could/would part with?

part number
944-126-021-03-M100

Thanks for the input in advance

Sorry for the long winded post!

That's a turnbuckle. Never seen one break on the threads like that. I really can't imagine how a break like that could occur. Looks like it just sheared. Metal fatigue?

I bent mine up and had to replace it (the center section is just hollow tube and I bent it up gripping it with a pipe wrench trying to break the nuts free).

I'd think that'd be a $5 part in a wrecking yard or in a parts car. Got any wrecking yards nearby?

And congratulations on the belts and rollers and stuff!

Do you want the whole thing or just the end part?

To prevent this from happening, the first step is to loosen the turnbuckle retaining bolts before loosening the locknuts on the presure rod. Once the proper tension is achieved by turning the pressure rod, tighten the locknuts and then tighten the retaining bolts as the last step.

I had a similar break on my power steering turnbuckle, right through the threads near the looped end.

What's power steering? I lost the whole rod, the only thing left was the eyelet closest to the passengers side. I heard it as it went out the back. I was on a road trip when it relieved itself of its duties. I was glad I had a 1 inch smaller belt on it, even if I didn't have the low side on the compressor or hadn't swapped to 134, it came in handy.

The short term fix included cat 5 ethernet cable, I left it that way for a good month or so.

I had mine tied up with speaker cable for 4 months. I have it mounted now, but with the wrong size screws and whatnots. It's not connected with a belt though.

Funny. I never thought that I could shear off a 13mm stud like that, but there it went! Right in half! As far as I know, the alternator turnbuckle is fine
