I spend 3 years dispatching at FD during college.

Procedures have since changed but at the time they allowed radio com much discretion.

If I new it was low key I'd talk into the mike softly. If it was a hot one with multiple calls etc I'd go on the air heavy & loud with details to send a signal to other town dispatchers and news crews that a scene was erupting.

also.. during one Labor Day weekend day I dispatched over 3 working building fires with mutual aids, multiple EMS beach calls, car accidents and had news crews calling, had to filter info to the chiefs, etc etc. It was nuts.

It was so hectic that I couldn't get relieved because there was no way one guy could pick up on everything going on. 3 guys eventually filled in. 1 guy on the radio, 1 guy on the phone, and 1 guy talking to the walk-ins. I received a letter of commendation on that one.

An old old lady once called in smoke alarm to a multiple dwelling and the issue turned out to be her vibrator going off in her drawer.
