Anyone ever dispatch police/fire/ems?
That's part of my new gig (including 9-1-1 call taking) and I'm just wondering if anyone else here ever worked in the field.

Any good funny stories about people calling 911 that shouldn't have? (Like when they don't get their fries at the drive-in.)

It's more common than you might imagine, though many/most are genuinely crazy or drugged out. People call 911 for everything/anything.

lol, I would probably get your call too. The Airport (terminal) is actually under GR jurisdiction if you can believe it.

I worked as a police dispatcher in the Navy. Friday and Saturday nights can be very interesting on a Navy base... especially with new recruits experiencing their first taste of freedom after boot camp.

Firefighter here.
One word of advice. Please, please please, when you key the mic, be ready to talk. Nothing more annoying then 10 secs of static or backround noise before the dispatcher says something. Our distpatchers have a real bad habit of doing that.

Wow Lendaddy.... I must have missed this. You got the job you were pursuing awhile back... congrats. Does this mean you have totally closed the doors at your family business?

We had an informal 10-code when the patrol officers were taking a potty break... 10-100 and 10-200 - ie going #1 and #2. While not an official code, it was good for the dispatchers to know whether the officer would be out of service for a coupe a minutes or a bit longer.
One day our watch commander came on the radio and announced he would be out of service for a 10-200. Well, the base commander, a very no-nonsense woman, happened to have one of our radios onstalled in her car and immediately requested additional information on what a 10-200 was. While I was trying to figure out how to phrase it, the watch commander came on a few seconds later and explained it wasn't on the code sheet, but he was informing dispatch that he was taking a bathroom break. That job was probably the most fun I've ever had while getting paid.

I spend 3 years dispatching at FD during college.
Procedures have since changed but at the time they allowed radio com much discretion. If I new it was low key I'd talk into the mike softly. If it was a hot one with multiple calls etc I'd go on the air heavy & loud with details to send a signal to other town dispatchers and news crews that a scene was erupting. also.. during one Labor Day weekend day I dispatched over 3 working building fires with mutual aids, multiple EMS beach calls, car accidents and had news crews calling, had to filter info to the chiefs, etc etc. It was nuts. It was so hectic that I couldn't get relieved because there was no way one guy could pick up on everything going on. 3 guys eventually filled in. 1 guy on the radio, 1 guy on the phone, and 1 guy talking to the walk-ins. I received a letter of commendation on that one. An old old lady once called in smoke alarm to a multiple dwelling and the issue turned out to be her vibrator going off in her drawer.

I feel pretty safe assuming that the headaches encountered in thenew job will be very mild compared to the ones you got from running a shop in these times. Once again.... congrats on the new job.

What is 10-8?
The gun shop I go to now is a cop shop and called "10-8 Outfitters". My Kel-Tec still isn't in yet.
