BMW Roundel 95 525i started then died-now no start

If the car sits for a few days, or if battery is disconnected and reconnected the car will start briefly, and then nothing.... When continuing to crank, it acts like it wants to start but will not.
I jumped pin 30 to 87 (fuel-pump relay pin numbers) to try and "hot wire" pumps, but did not seem to have any power coming through either pin (was this the right way to "jump' relay... I tried it on both of the light green relays, and assumed the white relay was for the cat(?) ------- but still wouldn't start

Yesterday after sitting over a week it started up and ran almost 10 seconds really smoothly and just died out.

Does this car need a crankshaft position sensor, a fuel pump assembly, or what?

It died about a month ago a block from the house and tried all the basic stuff like checking the fuses (number 23) etc. - when I jumped the efi relay it seemed to respond. I doubt it is out of gas because the gauge has never been wrong and gas was recently put in before it died.

PLEASE HELP
