BMW Roundel 95 525i started then died-now no start

If the car sits for a few days, or if battery is disconnected and reconnected the car will start briefly, and then nothing.... When continuing to crank, it acts like it wants to start but will not.
I jumped pin 30 to 87 (fuel-pump relay pin numbers) to try and "hot wire" pumps, but did not seem to have any power coming through either pin (was this the right way to "jump' relay... I tried it on both of the light green relays, and assumed the white relay was for the cat(?) ------- but still wouldn't start

Yesterday after sitting over a week it started up and ran almost 10 seconds really smoothly and just died out.

Does this car need a crankshaft position sensor, a fuel pump assembly, or what?

It died about a month ago a block from the house and tried all the basic stuff like checking the fuses (number 23) etc. - when I jumped the efi relay it seemed to respond. I doubt it is out of gas because the gauge has never been wrong and gas was recently put in before it died.

PLEASE HELP

Was it not driveable when you bought it? Or did you drive it for awhile then the problem came about?

BMW Roundel

not driveable when bought it....
Just posted what was told to me about "how" it died, the gas, and what would happen when it sat for a while(days) I bought it for $400 NON RUNNING AND WOULD LOVE TO DRIVE IT.

I did try to jump the relays, the relay box on right side obviously had not been opened for a long time as I had to use vise grips on a phillips head to get them loose.
I went to buy it and when we put power to the dead battery I cranked the motor and the first time IT STARTED, and then died out. It sounded good, no noise, no smoke. It acted like it would start after that, but sounded like it was out of gas. I was hoping it was a relay, but after jumping them and nothing, I was disappointed. I am prepared to put a pump, crank sensor or whatever in it at the price I paid, but do no want to buy a bunch of parts for nothing.

I know the guy I got it from tried all the BMW forums but I have faith in Pelican.

BMW Roundel

I'd say start with the basics. Make sure battery terminals are not corroded/broken and tight. Check air box for any mouse nests. Cars/bikes that sit for awhile always get these. Change oil, filter, and fuel filter. Change the plugs. Change any fuel pump/fuel injector fuses. Check/replace fuel relays. (all the inexpensive stuff). Do you have a test light? I'd start checking to see where i have power and where i don't. Check to see if power is going to the relay, then if it's going to the pump.

Agree with EuroShark. In particular the fuel filter and fuel pump. My M50 E34 had similar problem that was cured with a new fuel pump.

I would start with a fuel pressure test gage from NAPA, Autozone or anywhere similar. For about $30 you can see your fuel pressure when/ if it starts, but more importantly, you can see what the pressure is when it FAILS. It the pressure is over about 35 (not perfect but enough to run) then you should look elsewhere for your problem. Either ignition or the sensors that feed the ECU.
I assume you have checked compressions? Don't throw money on shotgunning parts, buy some cheap but reasonable diagnostic tools which you may even be able to share the cost with friends or a local car club?
Good luck
