i road race and do time trails . i do not know auto crossing classes or rules but a regrind on the stock cam should be ok no ? so get the compresion up to 11 to 1 that way you still could keep the stock 3 angle valve job and don't use the crank from the 968 motor . one of the biggest things that cork up the 944's is the dated DEE sys. so if you can change it to get more air and fuel into the motor and a good exhaust header .a 4 -2-1 with longer runners is a big help on getting gasses out . you still can get the car way down in weight .i got my car down to 2052 LBS wet . a big plus with the 944 is its a true 50 50 balanced car . the miatas are close to 50 50 but are not . an other plus for the 944 is the body flex . the open top miata i had flexed when pushed hard . so hard it chipped the door edges untill i installed a full roll cage . so look at it this way the short coming with the 924-944 is its motor (power to weight)it does out handle the miatas and the short coming with the miatas is its handling but they have good power to weight . i hate to say this but when vw-audi designed and built the 924-944 they did a dam good job! it was porsche with there motor that killed that car.
