I don't think this is true. I drove my car to Wyoming in June and checked with them prior to leaving in case there would be some issues. They said no problem. They did comment though on trying to keep the yearly mileage around 5000 km.
Next spring I will contact them again to make sure there are no restrictions other than commuting to work.
