Alberta Pelicans, What Are You Paying for Insurance?

Just curious. My carrier has upped the price on every cycle from parking to driving insurance. Going to shop around a bit.

Insurance

For my 1966 912 I pay $145.00 for the year
for the 1972 911T I pay 165.00 for the year
Both of them are insured as antiques and the carrier is ING

Echelon(Brokerlink) 209-6300 $296/yr Vintage program

I think the only restriction is no driving to work and 5000 km/yr(approx). $2MM liability and $250 deductible.

What's the definition of a classic car? Is it 15 years old or 20? 25?

Insurance

I think it is 25 years, check with Brokerlink. Ask for Grant, he handles the antique stuff.

I just switched from Brokerlink (ING) to Hagerty collector car insurance for my cars. Hagerty is huge in the US, but new to Canada. Premium was about the same as Brokerlink (ie cheap), but there were a couple of advantages.

Brokerlink officially restricts usage to car club activities, maintenance and parades (or something like that). Hagerty, by contrast, encourages pleasure use. The other big difference is that Hagerty is based on agreed value, no appraisals needed. You supply some info, some pics and a proposed value. They validate that proposed value with their large stateside database, and potentially you haggle. When both parties agree on that value, you're locked in.

With my cars, I had no issues getting them to agree to my initial submission of what I thought they were worth. With 3 appraisals due this year, that alone saved me a few hundred dollars. You do need a daily driver, can't drive to work etc. I'm not sure about the vehicle age restrictions, as all of mine are 25+.

Locally (Calgary), they are rep'd by Palliser Insurance. John White. 403-259-2747 He was great to deal with, and you got the feeling that he actually wanted your business - something I would never say about Brokerlink...

I don't think this is true. I drove my car to Wyoming in June and checked with them prior to leaving in case there would be some issues. They said no problem. They did comment though on trying to keep the yearly mileage around 5000 km.

Next spring I will contact them again to make sure there are no restrictions other than commuting to work.

I had my insurance with Brokerlink and moved it to another company due to constant increases for no reason and when insurance costs were rolled back they offered no rate decrease... I moved every policy that I had with them.
I will give your guy a call and see what they have to offer.

I dug out the Brokerlink (Intact) policy - official wording is:
Quote:
Description of Use

In consideration of the premium charged, it is understood and agreed that the automobile(s) described in the policy will only be used for exhibitions, parades, car club activities and other like functions, including occasional personal outings, such as pleasure trips and picnics. The vehicle(s) will not be used for regular transportation purposes. It is also understood and agreed that the vehicle will not travel more than 5,000 kms each year.
One could always argue that your accident occured on your way to a picnic or whatever, but if somebody backed into you in a parking lot? I'm just glad I no longer have to worry about my insurance company trying to pull that potential weenie clause.

Good to know Ian. I think my 912 is due for its appraisal this year, so Hagerty may be a good deal if they can come to a reasonable value. What annoyed me about my last appraisal was it was within $500 of what I paid for the car, so that was a couple hundred bucks well spent I could have told them THAT. Duh. Plus the constant changeout at Brokerlink is less than encouraging. I hate to think what would happen if I actually needed my insurance. One more good reason to keep it in 5000 pieces in the garage so I can't drive anywhere and get in an accident

I switched over to these guys recently and the price was very good and really not much different coverage than my previous policy. (limited use, not collector) It is a collector car policy and I had to submit some pictures of the car and some interior shots. John is a decent guy to deal with.
