Naah, it could have waited, If I had access to PET at work I would'nt be very productive.
Yeah, the resistor has 2 thermoswitches in it. They look like small relay switches and they are stamped with 100Deg C on the side. Playing with it before I put it back in, it looks like as the switch heats up from current, depending on what speed your fan is set at, they open or close to route the current through the appropriate resistor (which there are 4) I think this is one of those grossly overengineered parts that Porsche is notorious for.
