Blower fan ballast resistor, Trials, tribulations and tips

Driving along yesterday, I noticed that my blower fan only operated at 2 speeds - off and full blast - which indicated the ballast resistor is shot.

I'm sorry to say that a call to Pelican wasn't much help - the person who answered the phone knew nothing about electrical systems (his words) and that without a part number he couldn't help (I was at work, no PET), and then advised me to email pelican tech support (I didn't need tech support, I knew what was wrong and where it was, I wanted to buy a part)

Anyways, Since the garage was closed, I called up the not so local Porsche dealer - they want $184 for the resistor!!!!

Took it out today - no obvious physical damage, so I soaked it in vinegar to remove the corrosion from the copper. The two little thermoswitches bubbled away for about an hour - after rinsing, drying, and reinstalling the part - everything works.

What? You can't PET yourself at work?

Thermoswitch? Thought you said resistor?

Yeah, one speed! Not two!

Just like zero isn't a number.
(Doesn't have a value)

Watch out! Here comes the weekend!

Yo, is ther a way to get pet to run off of a CD as oppsoe to a disk drive? I don't like how it installs it self to a disk drive like that. It would be cool to get it to run off of a CD so you can bring it with you where you go. I have to work on that.

Naah, it could have waited, If I had access to PET at work I would'nt be very productive.

Yeah, the resistor has 2 thermoswitches in it. They look like small relay switches and they are stamped with 100Deg C on the side. Playing with it before I put it back in, it looks like as the switch heats up from current, depending on what speed your fan is set at, they open or close to route the current through the appropriate resistor (which there are 4) I think this is one of those grossly overengineered parts that Porsche is notorious for.

digging up old old posts;

My blower motor only works on high so I think I need to change or replace the balast resistor. I have looked on clarks garage and I think they call it the Series resistor (6) I just want to confirm before I go tearing into this

you recommended white vinegar a long time ago, back then it was $165 for the resistor.

Don't know about the NA but the 951 has thermostats in the resistor area. They can get dirty and prevent the blower from working except at full speed where the resistors are bypassed. Leaves and junk can reduce airflow. The resistors need to be cooled (by the airflow) else they are a fire hazard. Hence, the thermostats. If your car has them (thermostats), just clean them as other posters have said.

Glad you got it fixed. The least costly fixes that work properly are the best fixes.
