Thanks Harry. Can't help but feel that the 'patina' look is the way to go.

In the cases where the hardware is too far gone to clean up I might try and source a local supplier of factory finish hardware (ie. limited to nuts, bolts, washers).

Is non genuine hardware like this still OK if it has the yellow zinc finish?
