Ebay is NOT actively trying to screw people, and they are not a non-profit.

Tom is right. eBay is reacting to their perceived lightning rod for scams. They want to make money ... don't we all. But allowing terms that can get their buyers in trouble is not smart business. Even if Kraftday is on the up 'n' up which I'm sure he is, eBay is still "arm's length" and there are a lot of fellows from Nigeria or Russia who would love to scam a few grand from people with a picture of a very nice looking engine.
I had a scammer try to cheat a Mac buyer using my eBay user name by offering a Western Union pay option. Fortunately the buyer got wise and contacted me directly. The local police nearly

caught the scammer in a sting. eBay was very good about helping me keep my good name and feedback history under a new user name.
PayPal may seem expensive but the security and privacy are worth a lot if you do business on the Internet. Just add the fees to your price and be happy that both parties have protections.
