On a serious side, when the plane took off - there was the pilot, Sawyer and Miles. I figured that none of them were in the church because we never saw them die. But then, Sawyer was there... WHat???

Also - I don't remember seeing Kate die. Or Aaron, for that matter. And when did Penny kick the bucket?

My interpretation of Ben staying outside the church was that he remained on the island. Alone.

My thoughts, anyhow.
Everyone died at different times. Apparently Hurley and Ben watched over the island for some time... probably a very long time. THat's why Hurley said Ben was a great #2 and Ben said Hurley was a great #1. They may have watched over the island for 10 years or 1000 years. Who knows. I forgot the term Jack's father said, be her referred that there is no "when" or "time" in the afterlife... so that explains how everyone could have died at different times and they all agreed to meet up there (in the church/purgatory) because everyone was such a big part of each other's life. But that train of thought brings about another problem... Aaron. Why was he a baby? He should have been able to live a full life and grown up. Maybe the writer's thought that would be too confusing to bring Aaron back as an adult.

One last thought... if all those people in the church were dead... including Hurley... then who was watching the island???? Maybe Mr. X and Walt since the writers just ignored those guys in the finale. Ha ha. Just kidding.
