I cured my super-rough ride by jacking the car and letting the wheels hang for a few hours three or five times.
The more I did this (I was working on other stuff under the car), the softer the ride became. It was like the shocks were seized, but forcing the suspension down through their lower range helped wake up the shocks and and now the ride is superb. Didn't cost me a thing.
This is my theory, at least.
