Coral snakes are relatively common in this area, I kill 2-3 a year in the yard but 12-18" is the usual size. They are not aggresive like rattlers but my great fear with Coral snakes is one of my grandkids trying to pick one up and getting bit.
The real danger with Coral snakes is the anti-venom, i.e. there is none anymore. It is hard to believe this is happening but a man was bitten here in the spring and nearly died before they were able to locate any anti-venom.
