Yeah the "friend of Jack" thing kind of threw me too. Maybe it's a regional saying. Left coast it is; "Red to yellow, deadly fellow, red to black, venom lack."
I was back east in Virginia mountain biking one day and came across a cottonmouth. Foul creature and much more aggressive than any rattlesnack I've encountered (and I've run across alot of rattle snakes in my adventures). This snake actively pursued me. I was pretty surprised to see it that far north, always thought they were further south. angela

When I lived on Lake Conroe, there was a bunch of rip rap(busted up concrete) about 50 yards from my front door that the cottonmouths liked. I could not even guess how many of those nasty critters I killed. Would go out there every week or so, pour some diesel in their hole and light it up. Baby ducks lasted a lot longer after I started doing that.
Cottonmouth is worse than a PMS'n insomniac redhead with a shot gun.

In the Boyscout Handbook it was "Friend of Jack".
Jack was "Fat" Jack Loticus, who developed the rhyme in 1862. Red Touch Yellow, Kills a Fellow. Red Touch Black, Friend of Jack.

thx - I see I only learned the first part of that rhyme as a Louisiana Boy Sprout -- maybe they gave us a dumbed down Handbook, appropriate to the state's edumacational system...

Coral snakes are relatively common in this area, I kill 2-3 a year in the yard but 12-18" is the usual size. They are not aggresive like rattlers but my great fear with Coral snakes is one of my grandkids trying to pick one up and getting bit.
The real danger with Coral snakes is the anti-venom, i.e. there is none anymore. It is hard to believe this is happening but a man was bitten here in the spring and nearly died before they were able to locate any anti-venom. Details here: Antivenom Shortages - Cost of Antivenom Production Creates Shortages - Popular Mechanics
