Flintstone has it correct, the metal bar you mention is a semi-floating anchor for the machine screws that hold the plastic hinge of the door pocket. I would definitely try to extract the broken screws and replace with like machine screws. If you cannot extract them with vise-grips, you may try to carefully drill them out or use an extractor. The screws themselves are small, fine thread metric and hopefully, someone can post the exact size.
