Do I need new torque converter on auto that blew planetary gears?
The new to us Sequoia blew the overdrive. Appears to be a common problem due to a weak needle bearing in the OD planetary gears. I have it at the shop for rebuild (too busy a time of year for me to worry about it myself). The gears are a mess and the shop tells me that they likely will have to replace the torque converter to make sure no shaving are left in the system. They say it is because of the lock up clutch in there.
What do you think? Am I getting hosed here or is it reasonable? It isn't that I have a way out if I want the warranty, but it would be comforting to know I am not getting the wool pulled over my eyes.
Thanks!
George
