As I have driven the car a bit over the past few weeks to sort it out, the engine does have a couple of issues which I don’t have time to deal with. The #3 cylinder has low dry compression (80lbs) but this jumps up to around 150lbs wet, suggesting that the rings may be the culprit. The motor idles well and produces good power up to about 3500-4000 rpm, but is flat after that, being very difficult to rev beyond 5000rpm and power falling off. It has been suggested that this might be due to a flat cam, but I don’t want to pull the motor and tear it apart. Removal of the valve covers and a visual inspection doesn’t reveal anything that looks obviously wrong, so it may be just wear and tear of a 43 year old engine that sat for a while. Based on this, I've reduced the asking price to $10,900.
