FS: 1968 911 Coupe
Car is sold and paid in full.
![]() This is a 1968 911 normal coupe (VIN 11830398) that was originally a special order color of metallic blue (code 52300-L) and retaining its original aluminum case motor. It was converted to a shorthood and updated with flares and a Carrera tail in the 1980’s. I obtained this California car last year from the daughter of the long time owner (she inherited the car from her father), who indicated that her father had the car updated many years ago. I had planned to return the car to the original color and longhood configuration, but I have too many other projects going so I’ve decided to pass it on to a new owner. A little internet research has revealed that this car has one of the last aluminum 2.0 motors (serial number 3380142) to come out of the factory, based upon the build number of the motor (12043). The last known aluminum 2.0 is build 12050. Based on the engine type (901/17), this car originally started life as a sportomatic, but it now has a 901 5 speed transmission. The original Weber carbs have been rebuilt, a new battery has been installed and I changed the oil recently. New distributor cap, rotor, points and plug wires have been installed as well. The car starts up easily with no smoke, with some very modest oil leaks from a couple of spots, but does have some mechanical issues that have manifested themselves upon driving the car more - see post below for more info. I have personally verified with PCNA that the engine is original to the car. We have examined the car thoroughly and find no evidence of rust underneath except around one of the anchor nuts for the belly-pan on the passenger side, and some bubbling in the cowl on the driver’s side . The floors, front pan, rear shelf and seat bottoms all appear solid, and much of the original undercoating is still intact. The shorthood conversion was performed reasonably well, by installing a later front clip (the clip was made across the tank horseshoe forward of the wheel well and shock tower). I believe the flares are SC, but they may be RS, I am not totally certain – you be the judge. The flares are metal and were replaced all the way down, so they include the torsion tube access as if the car was a lwb. The bottom leading edge of the flare on the driver side is showing some cracking. Car is on 15” replica Fuchs (7’s and 8’s) with Bridgestone tires in good shape. As mentioned, the original color of the car is a rare Lesonal code color (52300-L), a metallic blue which I believe was available only in 1967 and 1968. Examples of the color are hard to come by, but the few that I have seen are all quite beautiful, and for this reason, I gave serious consideration to returning the car to its original color and configuration. The current bumble-bee yellow paint still shines up nicely, but is beginning to show some age from use over the years, with typical chips and nicks here and there. The body is very straight with good gaps throughout. The only issue of significance is at the trailing edge of the tail, where the fiberglass edge is cracking, and the cracking at the bottom of the flare on the driver side. The interior of the car is in presentable condition, with later seats, newer carpeting, a newer non-standard headliner and a recovered dash. The original instruments are all intact (but clock doesn’t work) and a radio block off plate is installed in place of a radio. I have the clear California title in my possession, but the car has not been registered for at least one year, so there will be some back fees due in CA if you want to keep the car here. The car runs and can be driven away in the current configuration, but the original motor will need some attention. PRICE REDUCED TO $9,900obo for the car as it is presently configured. I am a partner with Kevin Mentzer in Automotive Innovations & Restoration, LLC, and Kevin is familiar with this car and can restore it to a swb longhood for a very reasonable price, which would provide a new owner with an expertly restored car in a unique color with a unique motor at a price that would be hard to replicate. Please contact me via PM or email from the board with any questions or requests. Lots of page views, several serious inquiries and one offer from a European who now seems to have disappeared, so still available. Drove the car all weekend, fine tuning a few things, but runs well and fun to drive! Offers considered.

Update regarding mechanical conditions
As I have driven the car a bit over the past few weeks to sort it out, the engine does have a couple of issues which I don’t have time to deal with. The #3 cylinder has low dry compression (80lbs) but this jumps up to around 150lbs wet, suggesting that the rings may be the culprit. The motor idles well and produces good power up to about 3500-4000 rpm, but is flat after that, being very difficult to rev beyond 5000rpm and power falling off. It has been suggested that this might be due to a flat cam, but I don’t want to pull the motor and tear it apart. Removal of the valve covers and a visual inspection doesn’t reveal anything that looks obviously wrong, so it may be just wear and tear of a 43 year old engine that sat for a while. Based on this, I've reduced the asking price to $10,900.

Sunday night bump for Franken-car....
If anyone is interested in the car without the original motor, I can install a well running 2.4L CIS Franken-motor to match Franken-car, in place of the original 2.0. Would do this for the same price as the mechanically challenged original 2.0 for Pelicans.

Car remains available, and price is reduced to $9,900 with the original matching aluminum case motor (but likely needing a rebuild). As mentioned in one of my prior posts, I also have a good running CIS motor (I believe it is a 2.4 with the 73.5 CIS, but the case is a 2.2) that I can install in lieu of the original motor for the same price.
