I don't know too much about an e90, or what engine is in one, but I have seen threads about some engines with double VANOS, having sme sort of rattle noise. I myself have not experienced it. But I know it is quite common with some engines.
If you have not done so you may try doing a forum search in this and other various forums where people have a car or car with an engine similar to yours, and enter a search about noisy VANOS and see if it discibes your problem.
