i've heard the arguments against free will. i have a friend, a very smart guy, that believes as you do. we've gone the rounds a few times. in the end, his argument is based upon a false premise, "one could not have done other than what one did." which is to say that one's choice(s) in the past, now that they are unchangeable, could not have been otherwise, otherwise those choices would be different.
as for my version of the soul, consider this:
there is evidence that our mind is the result of an organic quantum computer. think about the implications of that for minute.
