Today my old 305 engine goes to the scrap yard. It would be interesting to see how they melt down a chunk of cast iron that big. I wonder what it will be recast into.

i've heard the arguments against free will. i have a friend, a very smart guy, that believes as you do. we've gone the rounds a few times. in the end, his argument is based upon a false premise, "one could not have done other than what one did." which is to say that one's choice(s) in the past, now that they are unchangeable, could not have been otherwise, otherwise those choices would be different.

as for my version of the soul, consider this:

there is evidence that our mind is the result of an organic quantum computer. think about the implications of that for minute.

morning, stijn. nice christmas.

rick, cat vomit in the morning is always nice.

sid, are you beautiful yet? pictures or it didn't happen.

glen, i find it interesting that you didn't just rebuild that engine. perhaps it will become part of a ship or airplane. i find that i become attached to my vehicles.

dave, sixteen candles is one of my faves.

time to bathe the kid.

The new 350 was cheaper than rebuilding the old 305.
The scrap yard just gave me $26.25 for it. It is gone

oh, i understand the cost. i'd probably want to rebuild it, just for fun and to get more HP.

did you take it torn down, just the block, or did it have the pistons and all still in it?

Maybe a valve job and rings would have fixed it right up. But with 300K miles the heads would need a complete overhaul. The piston bores were likely egg shaped and really would need to be bored oversize and then buy new pistons. And while I am in there I should just dump those heads and replace them with aluminum heads, and for sure a better cam, and I might as well just replace all the bearings so that is a full rebuild. That takes a lot more time and effort than just a swap.

In the end only two guys thought I should rebuild the 305, and only one of those guys has a opinion I respect. Everyone else suggested I do the crate engine. The 305 is only worth 26 bucks. It is gone and the 350 is running great.

for the record, i agree. i would have put the crate engine in, then rebuilt the 305 at my leisure. most likely, i would have done exactly what you did. how much was the crate 350?

The brand new crate engine cost $1622.98 total, engine & delivery handling taxes and everything to get it here on the floor of my office. That is not a rebuild, it is a new engine with a 3 year warranty.

I really did want to build the 305, but then what? I don't need two engines for my car. The 305 have a very small limited market.

That's the advantage of most Porsche motors...soft rings, hard cylinders and pistons, ie. new rings/quick fix. Cast Iron Chebbies are the opposite. Soft cylinders and pistons, hard rings. Requires bore and hone, new rings AND Pistons.

Had a Chevy Blazer with worn out 305. Bought an older Monte Carlo with a big valve 400 small block. Rebuilt the 400 as a stump puller with RV cam, intake, headers, etc. Block had to be bored to next oversize and honed, with new pistons, bearings and rings. Also had to have the heads ground and hardened seats installed as the motor was pre-unleaded gas. Took me 3.5 days to swap engines once the 400 was built up on the engine stand.

Sold the Monte Carlo sans motor for what I bought it for. And sold the 305 for the cost of rebuild and parts for the 400 including the intake and headers, seem to remember around $300, it's been since 1989. Was originally going to use a Holley double pumper but never could get it to run well. Had the Rochester 4bbl off the 400 rebuilt and it ran great.

After the swap the 12mpg blazer went to 19mpg with tons more power! The Blazer had a 4 inch lift and 32in radial mud tires. A very capable off roader.

Yea, it was not a spur of the moment decision. I did a lot of reading and asking questions. I just wish I could get a brand new factory OEM 260 HP bolt in direct replacement engine for my 911 for that price.
