Looking at the diagram / pictures in black and white, I can't see the pins that would allow the spring to connect. I do remember the challenge of adding that large spring to the points you identified, but don't see it on 87-89 version (it's a hydraulic clutch vice cable, so I wonder if #1 (clutch master cylinder rod) should act in lieu to provide the back pressure. Similarly to a brake master cylinder, if there is an internal diaphragm problem, the brake pedal doesn't return quickly either. Just a thought.
