Clutch pedal question

My car is an 88. Every now and then the clutch pedal will not come all the way back on release. I checked everything and there are no leaks or anything. The pedal cluster is in good shape, but there is no return spring on the clutch pedal. I do not even see any place to mount one.

I have looked in the manuals and see there is a pedal return spring, but what I don't know is was there one on the year I have? I don't even see where there could have been the pin to attach one end to on the bracket.

Any info is greatly appreciated. TIA

Mine is an '84 and I believe by design they are the generally the same, but do have some variances due to the hydraulic clutch on the G50 transmission. Enclosed are a couple of pictures of my pedal cluster (84) when I took it apart to refurb it about a year ago. I'm not sure if the return spring you refer to is the one in the middle of the cluster however.

And these are off the 86-89 clutch pedal cluster - hope it helps.

Thanks for the photos and illustration. I think the spring goes between the 2 points shown, but I could be wrong.

I wonder if the later models had one at all.

Looking at the diagram / pictures in black and white, I can't see the pins that would allow the spring to connect. I do remember the challenge of adding that large spring to the points you identified, but don't see it on 87-89 version (it's a hydraulic clutch vice cable, so I wonder if #1 (clutch master cylinder rod) should act in lieu to provide the back pressure. Similarly to a brake master cylinder, if there is an internal diaphragm problem, the brake pedal doesn't return quickly either. Just a thought.

Your clutch pedal set up is completely different for pre-87. You have an adjustable eccentric bolt.

Remove the floor board and you can access the bolt using a long Allen socket.

By any chance, does the clutch stick more often when its cold? I had the exact symptom, and it turned out that I had a small leak from the clutch slave cylinder.

No spring ? My 87 is returned via the very large spring with about 3 or 5 coils shown above thats wound around the white plastic rod. Spring #4 on bushing #3. Does your car have those parts or is it like fbeatty's photos.

You need to replace the clutch master and slave cylinders.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Jesse16 the photo was not mine, but one I lifted from Skip1 and marked with the line.

megarian, warm or cold no real difference on the sticking. It only occurs every now and then with no regularity whatsoever

DRACO as always good info, thank you.

RSTarga thank you as well, I will mark replacements as my next project.

When I had those symptoms recently with my 88 I replaced the master cylinder and all was well. Note there were no leaks, just the non-returning pedal. I figured the slave was ok as it is only ~5 yo. Ken
