Hence my acquaintence's reference to the FW-190's as the "Butcher Bird", a very formidable foe when they first became operational. The later Mk.'s of Spitfire used the Rolls Royce Griffon engine which I understand rotated opposite of the Merlin (which must have made things a bit challenging for guys used to the Merlin) but also made over 2000 hp in some variants - a nice thing to have in those days of aerial combat.
