"should go away" means ban, which is irrelevant to criminals. So your question pertains to legally owned handguns, and the answer to your question is that neither contributes any significant death toll.
But since people like to make gun/dog comparisons for some reason, IMO I think that you are ultimately responsible for your actions. That means that if your gun kills someone, you are the problem. If your dog kills someone, you are the problem.
If I shoot someone for no reason, I get prosecuted for murder or at least manslaughter. The gun had nothing to do with it. I would be fine if the law held dog owners to the same standard.
