I like how so many of these anti-dog people are gun owners claiming they would shoot any dog that 'threatened' them. Remind me again, how many people die each year in this country from gunshot wounds vs dog bites. Seriously, which should go away first, pitbulls or handguns?

BTW, I think Rhodesians are magnificent animals. I have a larger dog because of the coyotes. I just wouldn't have something that was designed to be a killing machine around little kids.

I am a true animal lover-always have been.
BUT.-I haven't forgotten that THEY ARE ANIMALS. Remember all those monetary causes, and big ones..IF IT JUST SAVES ONE LIFE... Well here is an obvious cause that had many effects..!!! Like I said.IF WE CAN ONLY SAVE ONE LIFE........ -have to deal with the problem.

I had a experience with 3 pit bulls recently and I will tell you that my only concern was my survival ... The first words out of the owners mouth were "Who shot my dog?".

They're always perfect little angels... Until they're not.

They're NEVER perfect little angels. When a dog owner believes the dog won't hurt anyone, the owner is the problem.

It seems there is always some breed of "guard-dog" that comes into fashion, becomes vilified (with some justification) and eventually falls off the radar, when the breed goes out of fashion among "tough-guys and gals" and the emphasis on protection disappears.
In my dad's time it was boxers and shepherds. In my younger days, gals were buying Dobies and Rottweillers as symbols of... I'm not sure what. I well remember each of these breeds being widely regarded as sheer killing machines, with hair triggers. Today, at the dog parks we visit with our labrador, nobody gives a second glance to the several boxers mixing it up with their canine friends. Few seem to have any concern over the many shepherds in play. The doberman, with ears un-clipped, frolics about, virtually unnoticed. Still, I have had dobermans at my throat. Back in the early 80's when I was painting houses and dobies were the "protector du-jour." Right now, as a volunteer at our local animal shelter, I see many ill-used and consequently aggressive pits. Is it the breed or the owners? It's both. But it's predominantly the dog's training. A very savvy 12 year old girl from an agricultural family once said to me, "the dogs that love you the most, will protect you the most." Trainers have confirmed to me that the physically capable breeds that exhibit high loyalty are easiest to "turn" to aggression. So anyway, unless you guys decide to eradicate all the breeds that "love you most," I suspect that eventually, I'll be seeing pitbulls at the dog parks that nobody pays any mind to. p Last edited by piscator; 04-30-2012 at 08:54 AM.. |

Rhodesian Ridgeback is fully domesticated.
The original hotentot (sp?) hunting dog was partially domesticated, which was *one* of the many breeds mixed to form the current Ridgeback. I had one for 14 years and am on the list to get another one. Best dog EVER!! They do not attack anything. They will chase if you run, or will run if you chase, but no contact. Mine would run from a poodle.

Everything that needs to be said on this topic was posted back in post #40.
All dogs can have a bad day and suddenly turn on someone. The difference is, with most dogs its a little nip and a growl. Worth the risk for having the benifit of a companion in the home and all the other good things that a dog brings to the home. With a pitbull / lion / bear, a bad day becomes a maiming or killing. No longer fits the risk vs benefit model. |

But since people like to make gun/dog comparisons for some reason, IMO I think that you are ultimately responsible for your actions. That means that if your gun kills someone, you are the problem. If your dog kills someone, you are the problem. If I shoot someone for no reason, I get prosecuted for murder or at least manslaughter. The gun had nothing to do with it. I would be fine if the law held dog owners to the same standard. |

The only time I've been attacked by a dog (and I've been around a lot of different breeds) was a Cocker Spaniel.
