That must have been a long ride! Tell us more! Who counted the calories?
I know guys who go on 2 week bike tour trips with camping gear. They can't eat enough not to lose significant weight. They come back 10+ pounds lighter every time. Same is true for backpacking trips on long distance trails, i.e. pacific crest. I imagine doing this once retired, but in the meantime? I also would think it is a good weight loss program, if you can talk someone into a long distance hike, that is.
