Absent father is often the cause. Absence can be constituted in many different ways: divorced and not there, present but not involved, working all the time and never home etc.

As others mentioned, I also believe this starts very early, so saying something late in the game will not make a difference. A normal kid will want to GTFO from home as soon as they can.
