I snapped that pic from the original 1998 Peter Morgan book. What it doesn't say and what we all now know is that a depowered ps rack works quite well as a manual rack. The reason being that the ps rack has a lower ratio than the manual rack and when combined with the later ps smaller steering wheel, it's a wash on the ratio with the manual, plus you get better leg room.

Also what it doesn't say is that there was a "sports" manual rack option for the 944 that has a quicker ratio closer to the ps rack part# 944 347 015 00 It was developed for the early offset turbo cup cars but was offered as a "sports" option on all the models.
