does the orientation of the plug connection matter? it appears that many of the plugs - female and male - are of similar design, and I noticed a number - e.g. "339-7" on one face of a plug, but not the other side. that is it can be one way or flipped around.

A general answer is, if the connector would cause damage or cause the circuit to not function properly the connector will be keyed.

does the key have to be turned all the way to starting position to verify the brake wear sensor connections? I can see the "brake pad" light if i turn the key two clicks over (not sure what to call that). I can also see the "parking brake" light, however, the "parking brake" light can be turned off or on by simply moving the brake handle up or down.
No the key does not have to be turned to the start position however some of the warning lights require that the key be turn to off and then to position 2 to clear the fault after the repair.
