brake wear sensor wire harness
'87 944
question about brake wear sensor wire harness - NOT the sensor itself. can any of the wires in the harness be soldered together so that the "brake pad" light turns off inside the cluster? or, can this actually be done? that is, connect the wires so they simulate the closed circuit of the sensor that sits in the brake pad? N.B. this disables the sensor function. I'd prefer to directly short wires in the wire harness, rather than doing things to the cluster, or other such approaches - unless they are trivial. I tried deciphering the shop manual schematic and most newsgroups, and I gather this cannot be done. |

If you do not have ABS this will work. Follow the brake wear sensor wiring from each of the 4 wheels you will find a round connector clamped to the chassis, for example near the top of the strut in the engine compartment. On the other side of these connectors the wiring consist of only 2 wires. I cut the connectors off and soldered the 2 wires together and covered with heat shrink or electrical tape. The break wear indicator is looking for continuity of between these 2 wires, for each brake(4). I removed the brake wear sensor wiring up to and including the large round connectors. You will have to check your brake pads for wear your self.

Just out of curiosity, why doesn't this work with ABS as well? AJ

I took out the light bulb, I refused to pay another 70 euro's for sensors I don't need.

thanks for some interesting ideas. couple questions:
[1] does the orientation of the plug connection matter? it appears that many of the plugs - female and male - are of similar design, and I noticed a number - e.g. "339-7" on one face of a plug, but not the other side. that is it can be one way or flipped around. [2] does the key have to be turned all the way to starting position to verify the brake wear sensor connections? I can see the "brake pad" light if i turn the key two clicks over (not sure what to call that). I can also see the "parking brake" light, however, the "parking brake" light can be turned off or on by simply moving the brake handle up or down. |
