I think that story relates to the first 912s, not the 912E. I think the 912E was an ill devised concept to reprise the 912 platform. As they could not use the original 356 4 banger for smog reasons, they took the T IV motor that was being used in the 914 and VW models.
However, as that was also the last year for the 914, and that the 411 and 412 were already discontinued as of '74, you could be right.
And other stories point to a product bridge to the coming of the 924. So, who knows really?
