I dragged it in yesterday. It has significant rust in the lower fenders, headlight buckets, lower door panels, and door lock posts. However, the underside is surprisingly clean. The suspension , and floor pans are solid, the rockers are nice, ( little rust in the jack point areas) and all the rear structural metal is actually nice and clean.
I drained the fuel, stole the battery out of my 930, and gave it a few cranks. It would not start, found no spark. Checked the coil, and replaced the points. Nice fat blue spark, put some ether to it, and it fired right up. Fuel pump was frozen, so I replaced that , and it lit right up on its own fuel source. Actually sounded good, but was pouring fuel out of all the engine fuel lines. I'll replace all them tomorrow, change the oil, and let it run for a little bit longer. For the first time in my life, I witnessed a live mouse shooting out the tail pipe . My dad was twisting the key, and I was standing in the back working the throttle, I felt something hit my leg, and when I looked down, there was this little mouse, and his house blown all over my garage floor. He looked stunned for a minute or so, the ran off.

What is a running, driving, and mostly rust-free 1967 912 worth?
My neighbor has one that he never drives, and talks about selling it occasionally.

At present I guess not much, but I spoke to a collector of all things the other day, and he recons many true collectables (stuff that become worth a lot over time) are those things that were either made in very limited numbers, or those for which there was no great demand in the first place. I suspect that, given the limited production of the 912, and the manner in which they are at present regarded as little more than body donors bodes well for their future value.

I have a feeling he wants "future value" today.

That's kinda like saying a Porsche 356 is a VW beetle.
Yes it was based on the VW bug but things were changed and improved. The 912e has a type 4 just like the 914s, but it is not indentical to one installed in a VW. Lots O'different parts on the inside. |

However, as that was also the last year for the 914, and that the 411 and 412 were already discontinued as of '74, you could be right. And other stories point to a product bridge to the coming of the 924. So, who knows really? |
