What's this about 5-speeds always breaking? I have an 88 five-speed with 88K and I hope such a problem is not right around the corner. As for the big green thing, my 88 has one of those , but it's black and smaller. It's part of the sensing device for the cabin climate control on my car, probably same on your $1200 find. The main reason to have a Porsche is that it is a chick magnet, and you can do that in an automatic. However, my advice, fix it as nice as you can, then sell it and buy a 1988 N/A, so if you have no babe in the car you can still have some fun keeping the rpms right where you want them.
