I lifted the swaged, wrap-around edge of the speedo face using a large deer knife - yes, I know it sounds funny but I haven't had any use for it since I moved from Wisconsin. Anyway, just carefully work the edge up as you work around it. You can crimp it back on with a pliers when you're finished. Look at the components inside; it sounds like many of the comments were found to have broken gear. My drive gear was simply out of alignment with the worm gear. I moved it back into position and used small set screws (tapped into the plastic body) to hold the shaft that the drive gear is mounted to into position. After 1,200 miles it's still good.
