Odometer Repair possible ?
I had seen some other repair tips for odometers, but I think this may apply to just 914/356. Does this problem exist with 944 as well ( I have 83 ) where odom quits, because a shaft shaft comes loose etc. . . Second, how do I get the speedo open without destroying?? the trim ring on front is pretty snug, can't seem to lift an edge. Short of as sledge, any ideas

somehow, back in the 1970s, somebody at VDO must have scammed Porsche pretty good and convinced them to purchase a half million crappy odometers. yeah, the 924 and 944 odometers are all consumables like spark plugs, gas, oil, and air for the tires. VDO made some of the biggest piece of crap odometer gears that are so flawed that they are a regular joke with just about 99% of the German car mechanics out there. just about all of them know that there are like 4 924 and 944s out there with working odometers.. and they're on display at the factory .i have had 3 in my 924, and 3 in my 944. please don't make the mistake and purchase a new one. big waste of money. they ARE repairable, but that is no guarantee that they won't break again. does anyone know if it's possible to put a Motometer odometer in a 924/944? obin |

i must have gotten lucky with mine, knock on wood, because my 944 has 186,000 on the odometer which means it rolled over. i verified that by checking the speedo cable attached to the speedo and it has never been touched. it still has the red marking on the union that has never been broken.

I lifted the swaged, wrap-around edge of the speedo face using a large deer knife - yes, I know it sounds funny but I haven't had any use for it since I moved from Wisconsin. Anyway, just carefully work the edge up as you work around it. You can crimp it back on with a pliers when you're finished. Look at the components inside; it sounds like many of the comments were found to have broken gear. My drive gear was simply out of alignment with the worm gear. I moved it back into position and used small set screws (tapped into the plastic body) to hold the shaft that the drive gear is mounted to into position. After 1,200 miles it's still good. |

don't know the proper name of this tool, but after trying small screwdrivers and knives, I had the best results with a hook shaped putty knife. Don't pry the ring too much or you'll have a heck of a time getting it to look right again.
