I don't go hug people unless they approach me, but if they do, no problem. I do hug close friends and family.
That said - it is an absolute no-no in the work place. There I would stick my hand out and back off. Nothing good can come from it in a professional setting.
Also, I find it funny as mentioned, how some women 'hug', putting cheek on cheek and a faint pat on the back without any body contact. Might as well forget about it. I think they try to avoid their breasts touching? They do not only behave like that with men, but also other women. Very very strange ...
