Cycling is great for exercise, sanity, and the opportunity to connect with other people. I smile and wave, or nod at just about everyone that I make eye contact with on my bike. The next time out, they are all smiles when we wave. Works for other cyclists, pedestrians, shop keepers, and yes, even car and truck drivers. Amazing how everybody watches out for each other after just one friendly wave. On the bike, one is very vulnerable as are others who aren't in a cage. Its freedom and connection with the evirons. The groups that I've ridden with have been friendly to all comers and the others that we share the road with. Here in Saudi Ariabia we are multinational, albeit larglely a Philappino riders group. In the UAE we were a smaller group of mostly westerners. Weekend mornings here are really the only times that we can find safe riding due to the traffic and aggressive driving styles. However, in both locations those hours provide us with some of the best cycling roads anywhere on the planet. 30 years ago I used to ride from Hermosa Beach to UCLA, swim a mile and do 2 hours on the diving boards and then ride back to Hermosa. I commutted from San Gabriel to Cal State L.A. In northern Michiigan I love the MUP from Charlevoix to Petoskey and realize that the trde off to being off the highway is to slow down and smile and wave as I pass very cautiously. The effort of accelleration is a great part of the interval training.
