...are they supposed to dress differently? Padded bike shorts, tight fitting jersey and clipless pedal/ shoes have a practical purpose when cycling.

In comparison, doesn't it make a lot more sense to dress like you are in the peloton of a Tour de France whilst cycling verses dressing up in NBA gear to go clubbin?

Sounds like the same complaint that my wife has about me at family gatherings

I don't wear the tight fitting gear though because I am afraid of looking like one of those animal balloons (if you have ever sqeezed one of an animal balloons parts and saw what happens to the other parts when you do that, you'll know what I mean. )

I see too many people wearing that look. I figure that if you race and train you've earned it (and look good in it). If you carry an extra 50 or 60 lbs, you haven't earned the benefits of wind cheating fabric, and nobody really needs to see that.

Somewhere in between, I really don't have an opinion on what you wear.

Regarding the wave, a nod would be nice sometimes but I realize that people are busy.

I haven't 'earned the benefits' of being comfortable on my bike?

But you want me to wave to you.....

Yes Vash it is not just cyclists that pretend that you are not there. I went to my Jasper hike trailhead where the trail ended and seeing a couple of women and young men getting ready to leave, I asked how the trail condition was. One young guy(30 yo) just smirked at me and totally ignored me but the female(cute and friendly) said that they had just run it and the trail condition was good. I assumed by the time of day they had achieved the 27 miles in about 8 hours. It took me all day to walk it the next day. Arrogance and ignorance is rampant among some so called elitist sporty types...I don't think I am a threat to anybody at the age of 67 sitting in my Porsche Boxster.

It isn't about "cheating the wind". It is about being comfortable. The fabrics wick better and have cushioning in the right places.

this is our team jersey

I carry those extra 50-60 lbs unfortunatately. Trust me, it's not the loose fitting clothing that's preventing me from cheating the wind!

I dig the old timers that have 20+ year old bikes that creak and squeak with every turn of the pedal - yet they have no problems passing me like I'm going backwards! Props to them!

Lets put this into perspective

If a person is let's say 5'10" and is carrying an extra 60 lbs, tight fitting biker outfits look ridiculous with skin bulging out everywhere

Those materials come in many different styles these days.

But that's probably not you, and what do I car how a person looks anyway

You have any of those for sale by any chance? If I would ever wear a bike jersey, that would be the one for me!

Cycling is great for exercise, sanity, and the opportunity to connect with other people. I smile and wave, or nod at just about everyone that I make eye contact with on my bike. The next time out, they are all smiles when we wave. Works for other cyclists, pedestrians, shop keepers, and yes, even car and truck drivers. Amazing how everybody watches out for each other after just one friendly wave. On the bike, one is very vulnerable as are others who aren't in a cage. Its freedom and connection with the evirons. The groups that I've ridden with have been friendly to all comers and the others that we share the road with. Here in Saudi Ariabia we are multinational, albeit larglely a Philappino riders group. In the UAE we were a smaller group of mostly westerners. Weekend mornings here are really the only times that we can find safe riding due to the traffic and aggressive driving styles. However, in both locations those hours provide us with some of the best cycling roads anywhere on the planet. 30 years ago I used to ride from Hermosa Beach to UCLA, swim a mile and do 2 hours on the diving boards and then ride back to Hermosa. I commutted from San Gabriel to Cal State L.A. In northern Michiigan I love the MUP from Charlevoix to Petoskey and realize that the trde off to being off the highway is to slow down and smile and wave as I pass very cautiously. The effort of accelleration is a great part of the interval training.
