I've replaced shocks on quite a few 928s and have always removed the lower control arm. (I just replaced all four shocks on a friend's '85 last Thursday) Unless you change the ride height, the suspension will bolt right back in the same position, so no re-alignment is necessary. On '86 and older models, it is necessary to unbolt the suspension and raise the A arm to just above horizontal and "screw" the coils of the spring through the A arm from the bottom. At least, that's the way I do it.
