You can pull the history from the DME to determine how many times the car has been ran to redline (normal) or exceeded redline (overrev). The redlines are type 1 and generally nothing to worry about, who drives a Porsche and doesn't run it up to redline at times? The type 2 are typically a mechanical overrev, as in a driver downshifts into too low of a gear and "forces" the engine to exceed the limiter. Type 2 can be the damaging type. Note that it's pretty difficult to do this on a tip since the computer controls shifting, you normally cannot force an automatic to downshift into too low of a gear.

Running the DME for overrevs seems to be the new IMS frenzy of the 996 world. I don't recall seeing much on the topic up until a few years ago. In some ways we can get a little too deep into the history of these used cars, at some point we'll be so damn picky that everyone will be afraid to buy used. To some extent it may be paralysis by data, but that's just my opinion.
