In my opinion I would much rather have a car with solid mechanicals and minor cosmetic issues, that way you can enjoy driving it as you clean it up.

Mike, if that is your price point and you want a no issues car, I would stop looking at turbos. $28k will get you a mint NA 996.
Matt, I would pop into the 30's for a TT. I guess my march line is under 40. I think I could source a 996TT for under 40 that would be solid. What do you think?

It sounds like you would like to find a pretty mint no-stories car, not a project. The mid to low $30k range is bargain basement for a TT, most of the cars in that ballpark are going to have some issues. Upper $30k range, you could probably find something pretty nice with a few miles on it if you shop around. I would expect to spend $40k to find a really nice no-stories TT with a good documented history, low miles, good options and color, etc.

yup - I have enough projects, I want something to blast around in and not have pour 10gs into to get right.

This looks interesting...http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=usedcc&listingId=131671558&aff=criteo&BAC=CRTpdB728dyb

Looks like it has been well cared for. I wonder about road noise with hard top. Has anyone driven a 996 with the hard-top?

they hook a computer up to the car and download the engine history. top rpm's, amount of time at a certain rpm, etc. you can see if a car has been beat on, and how bad. this check is really important in the lotus world. the exige's and elises will tell you exactly how many minutes/hours the engine has been at a certain rpm, etc.

Great looking car. One nit to pick though, it's a $40,000 car but they can't afford to replace a $20 headlight washer cap? WTF?

You can pull the history from the DME to determine how many times the car has been ran to redline (normal) or exceeded redline (overrev). The redlines are type 1 and generally nothing to worry about, who drives a Porsche and doesn't run it up to redline at times? The type 2 are typically a mechanical overrev, as in a driver downshifts into too low of a gear and "forces" the engine to exceed the limiter. Type 2 can be the damaging type. Note that it's pretty difficult to do this on a tip since the computer controls shifting, you normally cannot force an automatic to downshift into too low of a gear.

Running the DME for overrevs seems to be the new IMS frenzy of the 996 world. I don't recall seeing much on the topic up until a few years ago. In some ways we can get a little too deep into the history of these used cars, at some point we'll be so damn picky that everyone will be afraid to buy used. To some extent it may be paralysis by data, but that's just my opinion.

That Colorado car looks cheaper than a truck stop hooker with the painted schit interior.

If you're able to contact Eric (Kaisen) and convince him that you're ready to buy, he can source you the car you're looking for and almost give you a low price guarantee. There's so much markup on these cars that if you can get access to them wholesale you can usually get a better deal through Eric. He doesn't broker many cars anymore because most people just want to talk cars with him and don't buy anything, but if you can get him to do it you'll like the results.

Edit: I think I like truck stop hookers.

To each his own, but I totally disagree. I think the standard 996 interior is drab as hell (like most Porsche interiors). The painted console in particular is a nice way to add a little color, and it's not too crazy on this car.

I bought my 02 for that price range with 19k on it. Unfortunately, it has a very small oil leak on it and is a Tip. And I can't get the Hawaii cd for the PCM Nav.

99 Porsche Boxster

Wow! it really seems like it wont be long before there are running 5k boxsters, and 10k 996 cars. I don't know if it is just the time of the year or what, but they seem to be dropping in $ .

Just normal depreciation for a a 15 year old car.

Nice 2002 BMW M3 for $11K seems like a good deal even though it has a slush box.

Liquidating BMW M3
