End of the story: It works!! With the help of those here on this forum, I managed to get a 100% disfunctional sunroof into 100% operation... whoo hooo. Thanks!!
As a final note, in adjustiing the torque the wrench that I had must not have been that accurate because it was still eating the gears (used the previous halfway munched gears as a testbed) so I found adjusting it by hand was more effective.
Just got back from driving through the mountains with the top out... :-)
