I had an AMEX card for years. On day when the renewal time came and they wanted 65 bucks for the honor of having their card I just told them to close the account. No big deal to live without it. A couple of years later I got a nasty phone call from them claiming I owed a bunch of money. I told them I had closed the account several years ago. There was a pause and she said, you are right this account is closed and you don't owe this debt. No one should have been able to use that account. I always wondered what happened. I was just happy they did not want me to pay for it.
