My original post wasn't clear, but I would mostly focus on bringing it back to original appearance. I probably wouldn't touch the mechanic, assuming it's in good condition.
In any case, your post isn't of much help with regards to my initial question... I don't really care if it makes sense to you or not. 912 (or long hoods in general) might be plentiful where you are, but not around here.
