I have a 2011 TDI Golf. I take mine to the dealer for the filter change. $115. It is the only thing I don't do myself. The reason is the high pressure fuel pump. If it fails, VW generally fixes it, even if it is out of warranty. I don't want to give them the excuse that my DIY effed up the fuel system. So, my plan is to only have VW touch the fuel system to stay on the safe side. $115 every 20k mi is bearable in my book. The scan tool to do it right is >$300, so it will take 3 services just to amortize the tool - starting out with 36k mile free service that's 100k miles until you get pay back on doing your own service properly.

No matter what you do, I definitely would NOT skip the service purging the system with the proper scan tool.
